What is the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) represents a significant advance in disability care and support across Australia. Designed to assist approximately 4.3 million Australians with disabilities, the NDIS commits to providing comprehensive support tailored to individual needs.

Over the next five years, the NDIS will allocate approximately $22 billion each year to support around 500,000 Australians under the age of 65 who live with permanent and significant disabilities. This funding is crucial in facilitating access to necessary services and support for many individuals for whom such resources were previously out of reach.

The NDIS goes beyond mere financial assistance; it serves as a bridge connecting individuals with disabilities to essential community services. These include access to medical care, participation in local sporting clubs, and engagement with support groups, libraries, and schools.

“We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we gather today, the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation. We pay our respects to their Elders past and present, and extend that respect to other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who are present today.

We recognize the Gadigal people’s continuous connection to land, waters, and culture. We stand on land that has been cared for and nurtured by them for tens of thousands of years, and we commit to learning and sharing knowledge of their continuing cultural heritage.

As we share our own stories, learnings, and research, we also pay our respects to the resilience and strength of the Gadigal people and acknowledge the impact of colonization which continues to be felt today. We are committed to moving forward in the spirit of reconciliation and community building.”
